Football season is highly anticipated among fans of the sport, particularly in high school and collegiate levels. It is usually during this period when talent scouts from major teams in American football look for prospective players that they hope to recruit as a professional athlete of the National Football League (NFL). There’s plenty of mixed emotions involved when the subject of football comes up, for both the players of the sport and the thousands of fans who support their home teams. So in the spirit of football season, here are some great movies which showcase the sport in scholastic circuits—and even one featuring the high-stakes professional arena!

Varsity Blues (1999)

There’s always the pressure to perform exceptionally well on the playing field. But what if a quarterback wants a life outside of football? That’s a question answered in this coming-of-age film that sees an intelligent high school athlete breaking all the rules in order to follow his dreams and escape his small town life.

Any Given Sunday (1999)

Life in professional football isn’t all that’s cracked up to be. In fact, athletes who enter this world have to deal with beleaguered coaches, narcissistic teammates, and ambitious team managers. It’s a heady mix that is depicted quite well in this movie that presents the ups and downs of a career in professional football.

Remember the Titans (2000)

It’s not easy for any football coach managing a football team, particularly when said football team is racially divided. Settling differences to achieve the goal of bringing glory to their school, this is an inspirational story that is based on the real-life career experiences of African-American football coach, Herman Boone.

Friday Night Lights (2004)

Based on a non-fiction book and spawning a similarly-themed TV series, this movie chronicles the lives of characters in Odessa, Texas and the high school football team that the town fervently supports. Poignant and gritty, the film captures the essence of what it means to venerate a sport that gives life to a small town.

The Blind Side (2009)

A football story with heart, this film focuses on a troubled young man who has a natural talent for playing football and the woman who believed he can achieve greatness despite his past and his shortcomings. And like other entries on this list, this one is also based on a true story, this time that of NFL player, Michael Oher.
